Spectrum Health

Proposed Project for the MSU Industrial Math Students

Problem 1: Applying Short-Term Forecasting to Key Health Care Business Drivers

Projecting the number of beds/admissions in a given month, our department is tasked with tracking hospital market share, but lately we have been asked more and more to “predict” how many admissions and/or beds will be needed at the hospitals in advance. We have investigated trying to use leading indicators such as labs, diagnostics, etc., but we have not gotten very far with this.

Problem 2: Measuring Health Care Growth in the Value Era

Under Health Reform, traditional fee-for-service will go away in favor of value-based reimbursement.  Therefore, measuring business success by growing the number of procedures becomes less relevant.  How can we define a “share” of “value” in health care?  What metrics should we develop and track?
