Stryker Instruments
Proposed Project for the
MSU Industrial Math Students
Medical Device Organizational Resource Benchmarking
Stryker is one of the world's leading medical technology companies and is
dedicated to helping healthcare professionals perform their jobs more
efficiently while enhancing patient care. We provide innovative orthopaedic
implants as well as state-of-the-art medical and surgical equipment to help
people lead more active and more satisfying lives.
Stryker Instruments is a division of Stryker Corporation. Stryker
Instruments is made up of four business units, five manufacturing plants, and a
shared services organization. The business unit structure consists of a
direct sales force focused on customers in the domestic
United States, marketing, and research and
development functions. The Industrial Mathematics team will evaluate each
of these 10 entities that make up Stryker Instruments and make recommendations
on resource levels and organizational design to ensure that Stryker Instruments
is able to achieve its strategic plan.
Manufacturing staffing levels both on the variable and fixed overhead
financial classifications will be evaluated based upon productivity levels,
industry regulatory oversight, and company-wide initiatives. Business unit
staffing levels will be determined based upon new product development, sales
support, and direct to customer sales model. Shared service staffing levels
will be determined based upon existing centers of excellence and shared service
models, new opportunities for shared service based upon functionality that is
currently decentralized in the other 9 entities, or potential decentralization
opportunities on functionality that is currently centralized. The Industrial
Mathematics team will be expected to evaluate current resourcing levels as well
as propose staffing levels required to meet our strategic plan. The team will
also be expected to evaluate these resourcing levels against best-in-class
levels seen within the Instruments division, within Stryker Corporation, and
within the medical device and broader manufacturing Industries.
The Executive Sponsor for this project will be Jason Allen, the Senior
Director of Global Human Resources for Stryker Instruments. Mr. Allen has
