  •   The mileage rate for a new car driven in the city is 18 miles per gallon, while the rate for driving on the highway is 24 miles per gallon. Jared drove 210 miles on 11 gallons of gasoline. How many miles did he drive on the highway?

    a) 36 b) 108 c) 162 d) 48 e) 0

Solution:
Let x = amount of gasoline burned while driving on the highway. Thus 24x + 18(11 - x) = 210 ⇒ x = 2 . It follows that Jared drove 48 miles on the highway.
