Michigan State University - Diagnostic Exam

2.15

  •   The solution set for the system of equations x + 2y = 5 and -2x + 3y = 4 is also on the line

    a) y = x + 1 b) y = -2x - 2 c) x + y = 4

    d) x - y = 1 e) 3x - 2y = 1

Solution:
x + 2y = 5 ⇒ x = 5 - 2y
             ⇒ - 2 (5 - 2y ) + 3y = 4

             ⇒ y = 2

             ⇒ x = 5 - 2(2) = 1

Clearly, (1, 2) is a solution to the equation y = x + 1.
