In this option the TA’s teaching assignment EACH SEMESTER will be:

• Either a 3-credit small section course, like Math 124 or Math 132, OR three recitation sections of a multi-section lecture course PLUS
• Four sessions in the MLC per week.

The TA is also responsible for participating in group grading of common exams.

In this option the TA’s teaching assignment will differ in the two semesters.

In one semester, typically Fall semester, the TA will teach:

• two 3-credit small section courses, like Math 124 or Math 132, OR six recitation sections of a multi-section lecture course, OR one 3-credit small section course and three recitation sections PLUS
• ZERO sessions in the MLC.

As much as possible the two small sections courses will be the same course and the six recitation sections will be from the same course.

In the other semester, typically the Spring semester, the TA will teach:

• either a 3-credit small section course, like Math 124 or Math 132, OR three recitation sections of a multi-section lecture course PLUS
• two sessions in the MLC per week. In both semesters the TA is also responsible for participating in group grading of common exams.

Example: Fall - 2 sections of MTH 132; Spring - 1 section of MTH 124 plus 2 MLC shifts.

GTAs who are not assigned a course to teach are generally assigned twelve 70-minute MLC shifts (per week) for their ½-time appointment. This option is generally reserved for GTAs who have not yet passed the SPEAK test. This is different from the First-Year Assistantship.

Grading, RA, etc.

In case the student has a RA in either semester, a DCF in either semester or some other non standard funding arrangement in either semester the STANDARD OPTION must be used. In case of a dispute the STANDARD OPTION takes effect.

First-year Ph.D. students will only be assigned four 70-minute MLC shifts (per week) during both the Fall and the Spring semesters. This light teaching load is designed to allow first-year doctoral students more time to focus on their academic work in preparation for the qualifying exams.
