Michigan State University - Diagnostic Exam

4.8

  •   The common denominator of least degree of -----1------
x2 - 4x + 3 and 1
2---------
x- 2x + 1 is?

    a) (x - 1)2 b) (x - 1)2(x - 3) c) (x - 1)3(x - 3)

    d) (x - 1)2(x + 3) e) (x - 4)(x + 3)

Solution:

Since 2
x - 4x + 3 = (x - 1 )(x - 3) and 2 2
x - 2x + 1 = (x - 1) , the LCD is 2
(x - 3)(x - 1) .
